 WORKSHOP REPORT

Instituto Palmeiras’ first Capoeira Angola Introductory Workshop was held at the Studio Annexe, 25 Sydenham Avenue in St. Ann’s from Thursday 9th to Saturday 24th, 2007.  Due to the cancellation of the first open roda on Saturday 11th February, there were in fact five (5) sessions held at the Studio Annexe.

The workshop was marketed mainly through e-mailouts to the media, business, arts and culture community, as well as the gracious support of Che Lovelace of Studio Film Club who sent the workshop poster out to SFC’s mailing list.

Activities of the workshop centred around basic and intermediate techniques in Capoeira Angola, roda etiquette, music training, and open roda/classes on Saturday, which were free of charge and open to all Capoeira practitioners and the general public.  Workshop classes were priced at $40 TTD per person per class.  Current Instituto Palmeiras members were exempt from workshop charges and regularly attended workshop classes.

Overall, the experiment realised a financial loss of $597.  This loss was due to low attendance by the target audience.  While nine (9) new persons committed to attending the workshop, only three (3) new persons actually attended.   Intangible benefits included exposure of the Instituto and its members to a new audience and the privilege of hosting Instituto’s first open roda.  Also, following the workshop, two (2) persons have expressed an interest in learning Capoeira Angola at IP in March 2007.

Thanks to Capoeiristas Cécile and Maurice for their support and attendance at the sessions.  Thanks also go to artist Marlon Griffith for photography at the workshop’s closing roda and to David Bryce for his assistance with transportation of instruments and materials.  Axe as well to Grupo Axe Capoeira for their support of the closing roda on the 24th.
